Take Care of Yourself

Reality may not set-in immediately but you need to acknowledge your being a single mom as soon as possible.  Though a single mom, you can raise great kids.  Now that you are the only parent that your kids can depend on, you need to take care of yourself so you can raise your kids to reach their maximum potential. Taking care of yourself means that you have to be physically and emotionally healthy.
Emotional Health
An emotionally sound person is in control of her thoughts, feelings and behavior.  Emotional health is not the total absence of disappointments and emotional problems which could lead to depression or anxiety.  There may be feats of psychological issues but an emotionally healthy person maintains a positive attitude enabling her to bounce back from emotional problems. She has developed the ability to counter these attacks and channel her energy to make her feel good about herself and develop good relationships with her kids, friends and other members of her family.  She loves life and enjoys it.  She is confident and knows her purpose and has a strong self-worth.  She is able to laugh and have fun.  She is contented and does not look back at her bad past.  She knows how to manage stress.  Life’s changes do not affect her for she has learned to accept things she can’t change. She lives a well-balanced life; she works hard but knows how to rest and relax. There will always be problems but an emotionally healthy single mom sees these problems as challenges.  This positive outlook helps her to keep focused, flexible to changes and creative in handling life’s issues.
Physical Health
To have an emotionally sound mind, you need to take care of your body.  Exercise to strengthen your heart and lungs.  Exercise releases endorphins, brain chemicals or neurotransmitters, which energizes and uplifts our mood. Pay close attention to your diet.  Eat foods that revitalize your mind and body.  Avoid processed foods and using the microwave oven to re-heat your meal. Processed foods are less healthy and foods re-heat in a microwave oven lose their nutrients. Get a good night sleep.  Our body eliminates toxins at night while we are at rest. Our thought process is disturbed during the day but our mind completes the thought process during sleep.  You may notice that you are able to solve a seemingly difficult problem when you’ve had a good night sleep. You need to get fresh air and sunlight. A fifteen minute walk in the park every morning will do you wonders. Not only will you get some exercise but the increased amount of oxygen transported to your body cells will provide you energy and clarity of mind. Sunlight aids in the production of vitamin D which is essential in building our bones and keeping our skin healthy. Enjoy sunlight's psychological effect -  have a happy mood.  Always schedule a time for yourself.  You may want to be alone to think or meditate or to pamper yourself with a long hot bath, spa treatment or indulging in beauty regiments.
To raise your kids to their maximum potential, you need to take care of yourself first.
